The National Park of Underground River of Puerto Princesa
The National Park of Underground River of Puerto Princesa is a natural wonder, a candidate to be one of the wonders of nature. Located 50 km from the city of Port Pricnesa in Palawan, the Philippines, is an underground river waterway that ends at sea, of a length of 8.2 kms and is thought to be the longest in the world in its characteristics.
It is characterized by its formations of stalactites and stalagmites, and their clean water. There is no documentation of the year of its discovery, the first mention written on its existence dating from 1887. Such mention was made by Dean C. Worrester, assistant professor of zoology at the University of Michigan.
Around the year 1950 is beginning to suggest that the area should be declared as protected, and finally in 1971 was declared as a national park. Currently throughout the park occupies 22,202 hectares.
The boats offering the service of navigation takes about an hour in the waters of the river and in that walking can admire the rock formations and bats and birds that inhabit the cave. Read the rest of this entry »
